How do you start keeping Shabbat? In the beginning, keep it simple. Make a nice dinner. Turn off your cell phone during dinner. Light some candles, whether you make a bracha or prayer over them or not.
And if you live with others, don’t make it painful for them. You’ll get more flies with honey than with vinegar.
Don’t require them to do anything.
Just make a beautiful dinner they can join you for. Or not, if they don’t want to.
Do this for a while. When you’re ready for more steps, take on the things one or two at a time.
Try a beautiful tech free lunch the next day.
Start going to synagogue on Friday night or Saturday morning, or both.
This is a hard one for some people. Start changing your work schedule to avoid Shabbat.
Spend time learning something Jewish in the afternoon.
Minimize or eliminate your driving on Shabbat.
And yes, add a Shabbat nap. Yes, that’s a mitzvah.
And if you want a really tricky one, start leaving the light on in your bathroom over Shabbat. You will be surprised how hard it is to change your habits around turning off lights.
Shabbat isn’t all or nothing. Start at the beginning, and then keep moving forward. Just start. Make it beautiful. One step at a time. It should bring you joy, not pain.
