If you’re under 18 years old, the conversion process will look very different for you than the average reader of this blog.
Most rabbis absolutely will not work with you. They will not meet with you, they will not answer your emails, etc. Some might with active (and written) permission from your parents. It’s not personal (though admittedly some might view you as a potential nuisance, but you’re probably used to that attitude from some people). Legally, and especially in this era of increased concern about inappropriate relationships, it’s a big risk to work with youth without the knowledge and enthusiastic participation of the parents. And that’s before you get to it being the highly-charged area of religion. After all, your parents may think the rabbi is and agent of the devil and luring you into Satan’s clutches! (Funny except when someone believes it’s true!)
There have been exceptions who converted under 18 (who weren’t converting with a parent), but it is incredibly unlikely, and honestly, probably not a good idea for most people. This is an age of great change and exploration, as it should be. Plus, adults are still able to control certain aspects of your life, and we don’t want to create problematic halachic situations if we don’t have to.
All is not lost. You can still move forward on your conversion, even if not allowed to “officially.” You can continue to attend synagogue, read, learn, attend public classes, get to know local families, listen to shiurim online, take Hebrew classes, etc. I suggest emailing the rabbi a few times a year (quarterly is probably best) with a written update of what you’re doing and learning. Even if the rabbi doesn’t feel it’s appropriate to engage in a discussion over email, there’s still a written record of what you’ve accomplished (make a file in your email program and save them in case the rabbi deletes them accidentally or on purpose – or the rabbi changes). And instead of going to the tattoo parlor on your 18th birthday, you can set an appointment with the rabbi to move forward with your conversion!
